After Fidel and Raúl Castro, as well as the two who died Comandantes Che Guevara and Camilo Cienfuegos Juan Almeida was one of the most popular figures of the Cuban Revolution.

On the evening of September 11, 2009 Almeida died 82 years old in Havana on a cardiovascular arrest. His remains were interred Baños in the Sierra Maestra in the mausoleum of the martyrs of the Third Front at Cruce de los.

In June 2013, a permanent wall portrait of Almeida was mounted on a facade of the Teatro Heredia on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the failed attack on the Moncada Barracks at Revolution Square in Santiago de Cuba. It is accompanied the quote attributed to him " aquí no se bark nadie " ( here there is no one ) from the guerrilla war.
