Life and work

Andrés, who had temporarily taught at the University of Gandia, lived from 1773 to 1796 in Ferrara as tutor to an aristocratic family. He worked scientifically and maintained an extensive correspondence with the European thinkers of his time. Before Napoleon Andres fled to Parma, then to Naples, where he worked as librarian of the Royal Library. After the rehabilitation of the Jesuits in 1814, he remained in Italy.

Andres wrote under the title of " origin, development and present state of all literature " in Italian, the first history of world literature ( with more detail, but not exclusive, attention to the Romance literatures ). He may be regarded as a forerunner of modern comparative literature.
