Juan García Esquivel

Juan García Esquivel ( born January 13, 1918 in Tampico, Mexico; † 3 January 2002 Jiutepec, Morelos, Mexico ), often just called Esquivel, was a well known in the 1950s and 1960s, Mexican musician, bandleader and composer. It was rediscovered in the 1990s, along with the exotica and lounge music and is known as The King of Space Age Pop.

Life and work

At age six, he began self-taught to play the piano. His family moved in 1928 from Tampico to Mexico City. At the age of 14, he played live on the radio, and at age 18 he formed his first band. From 1940 he set daily radio shows. In 1958 he moved to the U.S. and commuted with big band formations between Los Angeles, Las Vegas and New York back and forth. His music was for this time, however, too extravagant, and he had thus commercially not very successful.

From 1962 he had a small band of six musicians and four singers, with whom he regularly toured until 1976 in Las Vegas. In 1978 he returned to Mexico. In the last years of his life he was unable to walk after a fracture of the hip and lived a secluded life in Cuernavaca. " Other Worlds Other Sounds " was recorded in the legendary list Wire The Wire 's " 100 Records That Set The World On Fire (While No One Was Listening ) ".
