Juan Subercaseaux

Juan Subercaseaux Errazuriz ( born August 26, 1896 in Santiago de Chile, † August 9, 1942 in Condoriaco ) was Bishop of Linares, later Archbishop of La Serena.

Life

The Chilean Juan Subercaseaux Errazuriz is a descendant of French immigrants. His paternal great-grandfather, the doctor Francisco Subercaseaux Breton, was from Dax, Aquitaine. Juan Subercaseaux Errazuriz came on 26 August 1896 as the fourth child of the painter, diplomat and politician Ramón Vicuña Subercaseaux and his wife Amalia Errazuriz Urmeneta, author of Roma del Alma, in Santiago de Chile to the world. His older siblings were the artist and Benedictine monk Pedro Subercaseaux Errazuriz and the entrepreneur and diplomat Luis Subercaseaux Errazuriz. In addition, he had a younger brother and two younger sisters. Juan Subercaseaux Errazuriz grew up in a deeply religious Catholic family. His father was for several years the Chilean Ambassador to the Holy See. He received his religious education by the priest Miguel León Prado, who later became the first bishop of the Diocese of Linares.

Juan Subercaseaux Errazuriz first attended the prestigious Jesuit school of San Ignacio in Santiago de Chile. He then moved on to study at the Seminario mayor de Santiago. On 3 April 1920 he received his ordination in Santioge de Chile. He then went to Rome to continue at the Accademia dei Nobili Ecclesiastici his studies in theology and philosophy. In both subjects, he received his doctorate and then returned to Chile. On 23 February 1935 he was appointed to succeed Miguel León Prado as Bishop of Linares. On 8 January 1940, the appointment would come to the Archbishop of La Serena.
