Juglans mandshurica

Juglans mandshurica is an East Asian species of the family of the walnut family ( Juglandaceae ).

Features

Juglans mandshurica grows as a tree, sometimes a shrub, and is up to 25 m high. The leaves are 40-90 cm long, the petiole 5-23 cm. Petiole and rachis are scattered hairs to slightly glandular, sometimes tight. The leaf is imparipinnate with 9 to 19 leaflets. The side are sitting, have an elliptical to oblong- elliptic or ovate- elliptic to elliptic- long lanzeolate leaf shape, 6-17 cm long and 2 to 7.5 cm wide. The underside is covered with dense hair, but drüsenlos and glabrous. Maximum along the midrib sit glandular hairs. The leaf base is asymmetrical, slightly cordate, leaf margin is serrated, sharpened the end. The terminal leaflet is stalked 1-5 cm long.

The male spike is 9-40 cm long. Each flower has 12 to 40 stamens. Flowering time is April and May.

The fruiting spike carries 4-5 nuts. These are spherical, ovoid or ellipsoid, 3 to 7.5 cm long and 3-5 cm wide. The sheath is densely hairy with glandular and does not open. The nut shell is thick, rough, has 6-8 distinct ribs and deep holes and dents. Fruit ripening is August to October.

The chromosome number is 2n = 32

Dissemination

Juglans mandshurica in China north of the Huang He and North Korea is home. It grows in mixed forests on mountain slopes and in valleys between 500 and 2800m above sea level.

System

Juglans mandshurica is placed in the section Cardiocaryon within the genus Juglans. The common, so also in the Flora of China, the nature Asked Juglans cathayensis is to be regarded by molecular genetic studies as a separate species.
