Julfa District

Julfa, also Julfa is a rayon of Azerbaijan in the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic. The capital of the district is the town of Julfa.

Geography

The district has an area of 993 km ² and is bordered on the north by Armenia, in the south of the Aras River (river) to Iran. In the mountainous region, there are deposits of silver, plaster and building materials as well as mineral water springs.

Population

In Rayon lived 2009 41.000 inhabitants. These are spread over 25 settlements.

Economy

The region is dominated by agriculture. It is especially wine and grain grown and operated livestock. In addition, there are several companies in the manufacturing industry.

Monuments

In the neighborhood there are several mausoleums, the old tower of the fortress and İlandağ Alindja. About the Aras lead bridges from the 12th century. Near the city of Julfa is the monastery Amenaprkich. The rock inscription of Ojasar - İlandağ is derived from the Urartian ruler Išpuini.

The Armenian Julfa cemetery, world heritage dating from the 17th century, was destroyed in 2006.
