Julián Gayarre

Julián Gayarre ( born January 9, 1844 in Roncal, Navarra, † January 2, 1890 ) was a Spanish tenor.

Julián Gayarre came from a humble background in the Roncal Valley in Navarre. He began his professional life as a shepherd, and later as a blacksmith. In Pamplona, he learned singing, later he went to the Conservatory of Madrid. After appearances at La Scala in Milan, Bologna, Rome, St. Petersburg, Moscow and Vienna, he became a tenor world fame. His singing was distinguished by exceptional skills and a wide repertoire.

Gayarre died after a severe depression in 1890.

1902, the theater was inaugurated in Pamplona as Teatro Gayarre. Furthermore, there is a Gayarre Museum in Roncal.

His life and work were recognized in 1959 in the film Gayarre with the Canarian tenor Alfredo Kraus in the lead role.
