Julian Marshall

Julian Marshall ( * June 24, 1836 in Headingley, England; † November 21, 1904 in London) was an English author, art collector, real tennis and tennis players. As a member of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, he was instrumental in the preparation of the first Wimbledon Championships 1877.

Life

Marshall came in 1836 in Headingley, a suburb of Leeds, the son of an industrialist family to the world. His father, John Marshall was a member of the British House of Commons.

After Marshall had in 1872 already written rules for the game of real tennis, he put together with Henry Jones and Charles Gilbert Heathcote in the spring of 1877 in preparation for the first tournament of the Wimbledon Tennis modern rules set. He also took part in the tournament itself, however, was subject to Heathcote in the quarterfinals. In 1886, he was after the retreat of Henry Jones for a year chief referee of the tournament.

Marshall died in 1904 at the age of 68 years in London's Hampstead.
