Julio Alberto Hernández

Julio Alberto Hernández Camejo ( born September 27, 1900 in Santiago de los Caballeros, † 2 April 1999) was a Dominican composer and pianist.

Hernández was a student of Pedro Camejo ( solfege ), Ramón Emilio Peralta (saxophone ), and José Oviedo ( piano). The age of fourteen he played saxophone in the Banda de Música in his hometown. He distinguished himself as a piano accompanist, which occurred over the years with the likes of Gabriel del Orbe, Pedro Echevarria Lazala, Antonio Paoli, Nidia Lousy, Emil Friedman and Carlos Piantini.

In 1922 he founded with pianist Luis Bonnelly, the singer Susano Polanco, the cornet player Juan Francisco García and violinist Luis Rivera a band to perform successfully in Dajabón, Cabo Haitiano and Monte Cristi. In 1924, he came with a vaudeville group to Cuba and there perfected his musical education at Pedro San Juan, later conductor of the Symphony Orchestra of Havana.

1932 belonged Hernández of the founding members of the Orquesta Sinfónica de Santo Domingo, which in 1933 he made ​​one of his first concerts conducted, in which Camille Saint- Saëns ' Cello Concerto with soloist Bugomil Sykora was performed. In the following years he worked as a director at the Dominican Broadcasting, the Orquesta Sinfónica de la Compania Anonima Tabacalera and the Escuela Elemental de Música initiated by Santiago de los Caballeros.

To mark the anniversary of the transmitter Voz Dominicana his zarzuela La brutal de la loma was performed with Elenita Santos and Gerónimo Pellerano. In his compositions Hernández joined classical music with elements of Dominican folklore. In 1966 he received the Order del Mérito de Duarte Sanchez y Mella, in 1977 awarded him the Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo the title of honorary professor.
