Julius Klaproth

Heinrich Julius Klaproth ( born October 11, 1783 in Berlin, † August 28, 1835 in Paris) was a German Orientalist, sinologist and explorer.

Life

His father was a chemist Martin Heinrich Klaproth.

Julius Klaproth devoted himself early against the will of his father to the study of Asian languages, especially the Chinese, made by publication of the " Asian magazine" (Weimar 1802 f ) first known, was it as an adjunct of the Academy for Asian languages ​​to Saint Petersburg called. Klaproth wrongly criticized the work of the French linguist Jean -François Champollion to decipher Egyptian hieroglyphics on the basis of the analysis of the trilingual text on the Rosetta Stone.

His scientific work was already considered in 1911 ( Encyclopaedia Britannica ) as a completely overhauled and is second only to literary interest. Inter alia Klaproth took the view that the island of Atlantis was described by Plato, located in the western Mediterranean Sea and includes the islands of Sardinia, Corsica and Menorca.
