Julius Lange (painter)

Julius Lange ( born August 17, 1817 in Darmstadt, † June 25, 1878 in Munich) was a German painter.

Life

Through his brother, the art dealer Gustav Georg Lange, Julius has been involved with 15 years on the project views of the most beautiful areas of Germany in steel and copper engravings (1832 ). Later he became a pupil of the painter Johann Wilhelm Schirmer at the Dusseldorf Art Academy. With its support Long could later settle in Munich.

Larger orders helped Lange then to financial success: The Academy of Fine Arts in Venice commissioned him to execute a series of sketches for the study of landscape painting; the Academy in Milan had painted two large pictures by him. During his stay in Upper Italy Long could also establish contacts with the Court of Milan. Until 1858 he had there held the position of Art Educator of Archduchess Charlotte of Belgium, later Empress of Mexico.

End of 1858 Lange returned to Munich and also found here access to the royal court. Since the Bavarian King Maximilian developed a soft spot for him, the Munich-based company was also very quick attentive to him. Also the son of Maximilian, King Ludwig II, acquired two landscapes for the Neue Pinakothek. For Ludwig II Long created several watercolors and gouaches - in connection with the planned construction of castles Herrenchiemsee and Linderhof, especially French castle views, but also interior designs for the castles of King Ludwig II

Nearly six weeks before his 61st birthday Julius Lange died on 25 June 1878 in Munich.

Reception

In Long work the landscape of mountains dominates; usually those of the Alps. The interaction of light and color, he kept trying to portray " untamed nature" of the drama.
