Julius Naue

Julius Naue (* June 17, 1835 in Köthen (Anhalt), † March 14, 1907 in Munich) was a German painter, draftsman, etcher and archaeologist.

Life

The basis of his artistic career put Naue in Nuremberg as a pupil of the painter Augustus of Kreling. With the intercession Naue came with 26 years in the studio of the painter Moritz von Schwind in Munich and remained there until 1866. During this time, were in part " Annunciation " (1862 ), "The Nordic saga " (watercolor ) ( 1864) and " The toads Ring" (1865 ).

1868 got Naue privately commissioned to decorate a villa in Lindau with eight frescoes: Germania, Roma, Alaric, Genseric, Clovis, Alboin, Odoacer and Theodoric. In the years 1869-71 he recorded 15 large boxes on the history of the Great Migration ( reproduced in collotype ). 1872-1873 was a Prometheus - cycle in watercolor, 1873-74, he painted in the ballroom of the Roman house in Leipzig Schwind's Cinderella in wax colors. 1873 also appeared the deluxe edition of Eduard Mörike " History of the beautiful Lau " with the outline etchings naues for illustration designed by Moritz von Schwind. The winter 1874 he spent in Rome. From 1875 to 1877 he led in a private home in Hamburg a fresco cycle: "The fate of the gods after the German heroic saga ," and in 1879 in a castle in Mecklenburg seven tempera paintings from the epic " Helgi and Sigrun " from. In his archaeological work Naue occurred in April 1884 with a lecture on the topic on The prehistoric swords before the Anthropological Society in Munich. His contributions were instrumental in exploring Celtic tumuli of the Bronze Age. Self-taught, he presented a number of smaller publications with a dissertation under the title The barrows between Bunting and Staffelsee accepted the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen as a basis for promotion in 1887. From its scale as multi-volume project The Bronze Age in Upper Bavaria, however, only the first volume appeared in 1894, which consisted of a revision and extension of his dissertation.

At the age of about 71 years, the artist and archaeologist Julius Naue died on March 14, 1907 in Munich.
