Julius Weissenborn

Christian Julius Weissenborn ( born April 13, 1837 in Friedrichstanneck at Eisenberg, † April 21, 1888 in Leipzig ) was a German bassoonist, composer and university teacher.

Life

Weissenborn was born in 1837 as son of the bassoonist Friedrich Louis Weissenborn. He was from 1857 to 1887 principal bassoonist at the Gewandhaus Orchestra and from 1882 to 1887 the first professor of bassoon at the Leipzig Conservatory. After attempts as a composer of romantic bassoon pieces he emerged as a writer of school works for bassoon, are still recognized as the standard. His bassoon school was later edited by Carl Schaefer.
