Junction (traffic)

A node in the traffic opens in a traffic route of the same kind a place where multiple roads intersect the same type, such as a railway junction or motorway junction, or a traffic route. There are several traffic junctions of roads of different types in the immediate vicinity and it comes to transportation changes, called this place transportation hub.

Most cities and market places have been created in such crossing points of the passenger or freight transport - for example, on Roman roads or at intersections of the Amber Road with rivers.

With the increase in public and private transport the networking of international, national and regional transport lines has gained importance. That is why in many European countries, so-called station offensives, such as the TEN and TINA network.

After the opening of the railway station at Frankfurt airport this has been described as Europe's first tri-modal transport hub because here meet several highways ( Frankfurter Kreuz ) and a train station and an airport with numerous long-distance train, bus and airplane connections.

Public transport

Road junction

A node in the road is a building or structure that serves the linking of roads or trails. A distinction is made in access road nodes, connection hub and road junction.

In road construction, various types of nodes are defined. A distinction is made between the first plane and the same plan free node.

A plan of the same node is an intersection or junction of roads at the same level. This form is characterized by the fact that cross traffic or open out traffic flows. The most common form is the intersection. If it is a road and a railway crossing, there is a railroad crossing.

A plan free node is an intersection or junction at different levels. The most common forms are motorway crosses and triangles.

Part of the same plan nodes perform two routes over each other on different levels, but are connected with the same level of confluence.

Subplan Free nodes have a height of streets freely in free-flowing traffic, the other equal level. The most common form is the motorway junction.

A special form of the roundabout also can be viewed because it has a level and do not cross traffic directly.

Not to be confused is a node which mainly deals with the road construction conditions of an intersection with a traffic node that describes a traffic intersection with the associated environment.

Nodes of individual modes of transport

Rail transport

As a rail hub, each station is called, meet at least two railway lines. Especially in long-distance traffic that does not necessarily have to be a branch of the nearest railway station.

Bicycle traffic

In the nationwide network of cycle paths in the Netherlands, the guides at numbered knooppunten ( nodes ) oriented. The principle has been adopted in the Belgian province of Limburg, as well in some areas near the border of Germany.

Highways

In Austria every motorway junction or motorway junction is called a node in the motorway network.

Traffic

Nodes in the route network of an airline are airports where flights of the same airline meet, without it must be a case, involve systematic Connecting as an aviation hub for an airline.

Traffic

In Internet traffic nodes can also be points at which information is conveyed.
