Juniperus pingii

Juniperus pingii is a plant belonging to the family of the cypress family ( Cupressaceae ). It is native to China.

Description

Can Juniperus pingii grows as evergreen shrub or tree of the plant height 4-30 meters reach. The shrub grows decumbent or upright. The lean to rich branches may, but need not be continuous.

The blue- green leaves are needle -like shape with a length of 2 to 7 millimeters and a width of 1 to 1.5 millimeters. They are just to strong arched inwards. Located on the upper leaf surface a pale green midrib and the leaf surface is keeled. The leaf base is decurrent and the tip is pointed. The leaves are in Dreierwirteln on the branches.

Juniperus pingii is monoecious - getrenntgeschlechtig ( monoecious ). The male cones are shaped ovoid to globose, with a thickness 3-4 mm and are borne in whorls. They have six to nine Mikrosporophylle with two to three pollen sacs. The female cones are ovoid to globose berry formed approximately at a thickness of 7-9 millimeters. At maturity towards them are shiny black in color. Each of the berry cones bears a seed. These are ovoid to nearly spherical shape with a length of 5 to 7 mm and have eye-catching resin pits. The base of the seed is rounded and its tip is blunt.

Distribution and location

The natural range of Juniperus pingii located in China. It includes there south Gansu, northwestern Hubei, southern Qinghai, southern Shaanxi, Sichuan, Yunnan and the Tibet Autonomous Region.

The species thrives at altitudes 2600-4900 meters. They are found mainly on mountain slopes where it grows in thickets and forests.

Use

The species is occasionally planted as an ornamental tree.

The first description as Juniperus pingii in 1944, by Wan Chun Cheng in Bulletin de la Societe d ' Histoire Naturelle de Toulouse, Volume 79, page 76 A synonym for Juniperus pingii WC Cheng ex Ferré is Sabina pingii (WC Cheng ex Ferré ) WC Cheng & W.T. Wang.

The species is divided into up to four varieties:

  • Juniperus carinata var pingii Y. F. Yu & L.K. Fu grows as a low- lying or upright, up to 4 meters tall shrub. It is native to the south Gansu, southern Shaanxi, Sichuan, and Yunann Autonomous Region of Tibet. The variety is considered by some authors as distinct species Juniperus carinata.
  • Juniperus pingii miehei var Farjon is indigenous to the Tibet Autonomous Region.
  • Juniperus pingii var pingii is the nominate form. It grows as a tree up to 30 meters high and is in the south west of Sichuan and in the northwest of Yunnan native.
  • Juniperus pingii var wilsonii ( Rehder ) Silba grows as a low- lying or upright, up to 6 meters tall shrub. It is native to southern Gansu, northwestern Hubei, southern Qinghai, southern Shaanxi, Sichuan, Yunnan and the Tibet Autonomous Region. A synonym is Sabina wilsonii ( Rehder ) W. C. Cheng & L.K. Fu.

Threats and conservation

Juniperus is pingii classified as "low risk" in the IUCN Red List. It is noted, however, that a re-examination of risk is necessary. As the main threat basic forest felling be specified.
