Junkanoo

The Junkanoo parade takes place during the carnival Junkanoo in the Bahamas.

The Junkanoo is a music and dance form that it is in the Bahamas since the time of slavery. What " Junkanoo " exactly means and where it is coming from to this day unknown. Most are told that an African tribal leader brought the Junkanoo, who came to the Bahamas as a slave. Him the name John Canoe was given. He wanted the right to celebrate with his people on traditional African way. On 25 and 26 December, the so-called Boxing Day he got his law.

Also it is said that the name Junkanoo has a French origin and came to the Bahamas over New Orleans. The word " inconnu " is intended to describe the strange and unknown forms of Junkanoo participants.

The Junkanoo can be traced back to African origins and remained virtually unchanged until today. In August each group defines the new theme for the festival, but the festival itself begins only on 26 December. Each group seeks the most original costume, the most compelling dance performance and the mitreißendste music to present, because only those who believe so wins the prize. The festival is repeated on 1 January again.
