Juraj Drašković

Juraj Draskovic Trakošćan II ( born February 5, 1525 Castle Bilina in Croatia, Region Bukovica (west of the town of Knin ); † January 31, 1587 in Vienna) was a Croatian nobleman, archbishop and cardinal. From 1567 to 1576 he was Ban ( viceroy ) of Croatia.

Life

Juraj Draskovic came from the major Croatian noble family Draskovic. His father was Bartol Draskovic (* circa 1500, † 1538), then a Kleinadliger from the south of Croatia. His mother Ana born Utješinović, born in Kamičak, was a sister of cardinal and statesman Juraj Utješinović, better known as George Martinuzzi.

He studied in Krakow, Vienna, Bologna and Rome, received in 1539 [ source ?] Ordained a priest and then became canon to Oradea, abbot Lelesz infulierter provost of the collegiate church of St. Martin at Pressburg, King and Emperor Ferdinand I. Council and confessor, 1557 and Bishop of Pécs.

In 1561 he translated the Book of Vincent of Lérins against the heretics ( " Commonitorium fidei "). He took for Croatia and Hungary participate in the Council of Trent, where he performed in the interest of the emperor. Ferdinand appointed him for 1565 as well as Bishop of Agram (Zagreb), and his successor, Maximilian II to the Privy Council, and in 1567 the Ban of Croatia, Dalmatia and Slavonia. In 1573 he became archbishop of Kalocsa.

Inglorious became known Juraj Draskovic in his protection provided by the authority position of power by the oppression and exploitation of entrusted Croatian farmers. As Ban, he was instrumental in the ruthless suppression of the Croatian peasant uprising of 1573. The leader of the uprising, the proclaimed by the Croatian peasant farmer king Matija Gubec, he had tortured and then executed on the Agramer St. Mark's Square ( Trg Markov ).

Juraj Draskovic organized the defense against the Turks, where he was relatively successful. For Emperor Rudolf II awarded him in 1578 the dignity of a Hungarian Hofkanzlers and gave him in addition to his other benefices in 1578 the diocese Raab. In 1584 the Emperor gave him the castle Trakošćan, which remained in the family until 1945.
