Juraj Fándly

Juraj Fándly ( born October 21, 1750 in Častá, † March 7, 1811 in Doľany ) was a Slovak writer and priest.

Life

His parents were living temporarily in Častá. The father, a farmer and craftsman, died soon and the mother moved to the neighboring town to Doľany. Here Fándly also visited the elementary school, then moved on to high school in Svätý Jur 1767 to 1768 he studied with the Franciscans in Márie Utah, and later still with the Capuchins and Petri disciples. Because of his poor health, he was initially awarded but no priestly ordinations.

In 1771 he began the study of theology in Buda and discontinued it in 1773 at a seminar in Trnava on. On February 15, 1777 he was finally ordained a priest and took over the post of chaplain in Sered. He worked briefly in Lukáčovce in Nitra, from autumn 1780 to January 1807 as a priest in Naháč in today Okres Trnava.

In between, in 1792, he took over the function of the Treasurer and the Board of the Cultural Association Slovenské učené tovaryšstvo, a Jesuit association.

His parish was the poorest in the entire district. The building was dilapidated, the pay poor. Despite these adversities, he led out his work diligently. He began in the church buildings to process cotton, so that his parishioners could alleviate their hunger. He practiced the task of a herbalist and physician. This his deeds also found in his literature reflected.

Persecution by the Church authorities, weakened by privation but also distrust, weakened his health. Sick, tired and disappointed, he goes to his family in Ompitál (now Doľany ).

Juraj Fándly was the most advanced and most active personality and writer of the first rebirth generation in Slovakia.

Works

In his works one finds ideas Josephinism, attempt to advance the national progress and strong social conscience.

In 1789 he published his first volume Confidential contract between monk and the devil, a literary form the Josephine reforms. The third and fourth part of this extensive works were banned after the death of Joseph II and Fándly was punished with a two-week jail stay in the monastery.
