Jurançon

Jurançon is a commune in the department of Pyrénées- Atlantiques in the Aquitaine region. It belongs to the district of the canton of Pau and Jurançon. Jurançon has 7037 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011). The inhabitants are called Jurançonnais.

Geography

Jurançon borders immediately southwest of Pau and lies on the River Nez at an altitude 159-356 m above sea level. The municipality covers 18.78 km ² ( 1,878 ha), and a population density of 393 inhabitants per km ². Neighboring municipalities are Gelos, Billère, Pau, and Bizanos.

Jurançon lies in the vineyards Jurançon and Béarn.

History

Jurançon was founded in 1117 as a Fixed morlaas. The area, however, was already inhabited in the Neolithic period, as by appropriate findings, eg a stone ax was found.
