Jürgen Linden

Jürgen Linden ( born January 13, 1947 in Aachen ) is a German politician of the SPD and was from 1989 to 2009 mayor of the city of Aachen.

Life

After graduation in 1966 at the Einhard Gymnasium in Aachen Linden studied until 1974 Law and received in 1974 the admission to the profession of lawyer. In 1975, he became the Dr. jur. doctorate.

Since 1970 he is member of the SPD. In 1977 he was elected to the council of his hometown and has held from 1984 to 1989 the office of mayor of Aachen.

After the local elections in 1989, a red-green coalition came about, Linden was elected as the successor to Kurt Malangré ( CDU) as honorary mayor on 18 October 1989. From 12 October 1995 to 21 October 2009, he held that post full-time. Linden stated publicly on 25 April 2008, is not to stand in the local elections in 2009 as a candidate for the position available. He was succeeded by Marcel Philipp ( CDU).

Linden has largely used for economic structural change in the Aachen region and promoted technology transfer and the creation of many new technology- oriented companies through the cooperation of the city of Aachen RWTH and FH Aachen and the chambers.

To strengthen regional cooperation, he founded together with District C. Meulenbergh the " Aachen region ", a community network of city and district of Aachen and nine county's municipalities. The new building of the campus RWTH in Aachen, the construction of the new Tivoli, the new building of the Jewish synagogue or the conversion of Aachen Main Station have been co-sponsored by him. He suffered a political defeat for the project " Bauhaus Europe," a planned Katschhof the cultural center, which failed on 10 December 2006, a referendum.

Linden has the Aachen Cultural Summer, a series of events including concerts, and introduced to the Charlemagne Prize Forum and the Framework Programme.

He also spent ten years member of the board of the German Association of Cities and Towns of the parliament of North Rhine -Westphalia. Linden was from 2007 to June 12, 2010 Chairman of the Alemannia Aachen GmbH. He was the proponent for the construction of the new Tivoli and has thus created a monument in the opinion of fans and citizens of Aachen.

Since 1989, Linden member of the Board for award of the International Charlemagne Prize and since 2010 its chairman, also Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the Foundation " Maastricht Capital of Culture 2010 ", member of the Council of the RWTH Aachen and a member of the Advisory Board of the Aachen Lauren Rennverein.

He is married and has three children.
