Jürgen Osterhammel

Jürgen Osterhammel ( born June 1, 1952 in Wipperfuerth ) is a German historian and professor of Modern History at the University of Konstanz.

Life

Jürgen Osterhammel attended the High State School in Hanau and studied after high school in 1970 in Marburg, Hamburg, Kassel and at the London School of Economics. In 1976, he passed the first, in 1981, the second state examination. In 1980 he earned his doctorate at the University of Kassel. 1982-1986 he worked as a research associate at the German Historical Institute London under the direction of Wolfgang J. Mommsen. 1986 to 1990 he was Assistant Professor at the Department of Political Science at the University of Freiburg im Breisgau. In 1990 he qualified as a professor until 1996 he was Professor of Non-European History at the University of Hagen. From 1996 to 1997 Osterhammel worked as a Fellow at the Institute for Advanced Study Berlin, before he held the Chair of History of International Relations at the Institut Universitaire des Hautes Etudes Internationales in Geneva until 1999. Since 1999 he has held the chair of Modern History at the University of Konstanz. In his 2009 published book The transformation of the world. A history of the 19th century Osterhammel have attempted a world history of the 19th century. The book was enthusiastically received in professionals and the public and received the NDR Kultur Nonfiction Book Award for the best non-fiction book of the year 2009. 2010 he was awarded the Leibniz Prize.
