Kadri Gopalnath

Kadri Gopalnath ( Kalaimamani Kadri Gopalnath, born 1950 in Panemangalore Dakshina Kannada district in Karnataka ) is an Indian saxophonist.

Life

Gopalnath trained by his father Nadhaswaram to play an Indian instrument similar oboe, and completed a five-year study singing in Mangalore. After he had experienced a brass band in Mysore, he learned to play the saxophone playing saxophone at the group Lakshi Narasimhaiah. From 1975 he continued his education at Gopalkrishna Iyer in Madras.

Gopalnath playing on the saxophone in Carnatic Indian classical music style, which earned him recognition by the doyen Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer this style of music. For this he undertook many modifications to his instrument, the alto saxophone. Also the Mridangamspieler TV Gopalkrishnan promoted him in Madras.

Gopalnaths breakthrough to an international career began at the Jazz Festival in 1980 in Bombay, where the American jazz musician John Handy spontaneously attended a live gig with him. This show was so successful that Gopalnath soon received invitations to international jazz festivals in Prague, Berlin, Paris and Mexico.

In 1994, he was the first Indian classical musician guest of the Proms in London; He also appeared at the jazz festival in Prague and the Berlin Jazz Festival. Since 1985, he has published more than twenty albums with music, which is characterized by the fusion of Indian classical music and western jazz.

In 2004 he was awarded the Padma Shri.
