The Kai (Japanese甲 斐) is recognized by the FCI Japanese dog breed (FCI Group 5, Section 5, Standard No. 317).
Origin and History
The ancestors were medium-sized Japanese dogs. Main distribution area is the former province of Kai, an enclosed area of Bergen. Characteristic of this dog, one of the tips is the brindle coat. In 1934 he was declared a " natural monument".
Description
The size of the Kai- males is specified in the breed standard with 53 cm, with small deviations are tolerated. Bitches are 48 cm smaller than the males. The weight is not specified in the standard. The coat color is black or red brindle ( the pups are about up to one year color). The hair of the dog is hard and straight with a soft, dense undercoat. The ears are medium sized upright tilted slightly forward. High set tail, thick, vigorously curled or curved like a sickle over back.
