Kaikoura Peninsula

Geographical location

The Kaikoura Peninsula is a peninsula in the north east of the South Island of New Zealand. It extends 5 km into the Pacific Ocean. The location of Kaikoura is located on the northern coast of the peninsula.

They were inhabited over most of the last 1000 years of Māori. This they used as a base for hunting the Moa and collecting crabs on the coast. According to a legend of this peninsula has the legendary hero Maui pulled a huge fish on land that became the North Island.

During the 19th century, Europeans set up in the region whaling stations. Today, you can the whales, the front of the peninsula visit the coast, life and uses them for whale watching. The whales visit the area, as squids and other deep-sea creatures by a combination of currents and steeply sloping seabed from the depths of the Hikurangi Trench to be brought up.
