Drangsnes (Eng. " rocky peninsula " ) is located on the northeastern shore of the Steingrímsfjörður near the place Hólmavík. The small, secluded village is dominated by a few small houses and a salt fish factory, fishing and its processing is therefore the main source of income of the village.

Rock Island Grimsey

Upstream from the coast southeast is the rocky island Grimsey ( not identical to the larger island of the same before the Eyjafjörður ), on the one erected in 1949 lighthouse.

That rock is according to legend, a petrified troll woman who wanted to pull a gap between Iceland and the Westfjords and - surprise of the rising sun - turned into stone.

Transport links

Drangsnes is located on Route 645, which heads north as road 643 to Djúpavík, as well as to the airport in Gjögur on Reykjarfjörður. The center of the West fjords, Isafjordur is west of the village on the road 61 reachable.

Population Development
