Kalehe Territory

Kalehe is a district in the northeast of the South Kivu province of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Its administrative seat is the city of Kalehe, which lies on the western shore of Lake Kivu. To Kalehe includes most of the Congolese shore of Lake Kivu, also part of the National Park Kahuzi- Biéga. The district covers an area of ​​5126 km ² and in 2007 had a population of 462 465 inhabitants. It is bordered on the north by the province of North Kivu ( Masisi and Walikale district ) in the west to the district Shabunda, to the south by the district Kabare in Easter to the district Idjiwi ( an island in the middle of Lake Kivu ) the province of South Kivu and Rwanda ( the border runs through the Lake Kivu ).

The district Kalehe was badly hit by an earthquake on 24 October 2002 with a Maginitude of 6.2 on the moment magnitude scale. In this case, eight people, houses and a church were destroyed died. A part of a village crashed in the Lake Kivu, which caused minor tidal waves ( tsunamis).
