With the development and construction began in Kharkov K. A. Kalinin and his staff in 1928. Technologically completely revised, but still built in the known design of its predecessors, it was for the conditions at that time a very successful aircraft. For this class was again the best engine BMW IV its use.

History

The design of this prototype aircraft provided for a variety of uses. Thus, three different variants / versions were built:

  • Designed as commercial aircraft to transport four passengers
  • Designed as air ambulance to transport four stretchers
  • Execution as an aerial plane: The cabin floor was a hinged hatch, over the two aerial cameras were installed that were operated by two photographers. This version found frequent use in the former Soviet aviation.

A model 1928 equipped with a 300 hp payable M-6 engine and shown at the International Aerospace Exhibition (ILA ) in Berlin. With an aircraft K -4 " Tscherwonnaja Ukraina " ( Ukraine Red ) was made a record flight from Kharkov via Moscow to Irkutsk and back in August 1929. The pilot was M. A. Snegijew, I. T. Spirin was his observer.

Construction

The aircraft turned out, like its predecessors, as a high strutted to the fuselage or wing monoplane dar. through more intensive use of light metal construction with the construction of the body part the unladen mass could be reduced. The wheels suspension had a solid axle again and could also be used with snow runners.

By the end of the cab portion of the hull was covered with lightweight metal. The rear fuselage piece was again covered with fabric, as in the K- 3rd Also on this aircraft used Kalinin tubular steel construction for the fuselage and the wing center section. Exterior shutters were manufactured in wood construction and covered with fabric.
