Kalos kagathos

Kalokagathia ( ancient Greek καλοκἀγαθία Kalokagathia ) derived from καλὸς καὶ ἀγαθός kalós kai agathos or contracted καλὸς κἀγαθός kalós kagathós " very well ", is the name for a Greek ideal of physical and mental excellence ( " beauty and goodness "). The term refers to a combination of physical beauty and spiritual benefits, as the holistic excellence ( arete ) of the person appears.

In the 5th century BC, the term was usually used for nobles, in the 4th century BC general for outstanding personalities.

Friedrich Holderlin sought both in poetry and in real life after this kalokagathia. The concept plays with Socrates, as in Plato's dialogues, or indirectly in Xenophon's Memorabilia (III, 8) a major role.
