History

It is a relatively young lake, which was created after the last ice age and its age can consequently estimate 12 000 years. Even before the Würm Ice Age flowed through the Lavason the Adige Valley and through the area south of the lake today. Originally, the surface of the lake was larger to the extent of today's reed belt and then silted up over time.

The lake was first mentioned in the so-called Vigiliusbrief (ca. 10th century ) as lacus Caldari. Heavy rain led to flooding of the environment and, therefore, already in 1242 it was decided to build an artificial ditch, which culminated in Vill ( Neumarkt ) in the Adige. Decades later, the mouth was moved further to the south, because of backflow, the Adige river water flowed into the lake. This solution proved not to be optimal, there was still too little slope. After a big flood, it was decided under the reign of the Empress Maria Theresa, to build a large ditch 5 m wide and about 20 km in length, which ended only at San Michele in the Adige. The lake closest point to the Adige River is namely 6 m higher than the lake level. The last ditch built still exists today as the "Great divide", also the former moat can still be seen ( " age gap" )

It is testified that as early as 1600 was an inn at Klughammer. In 1978, the reed was placed under protection, because it is an important stopover for migratory birds and even a popular nesting place for birds, as well as a location for rare marsh plants. 1979 Ring sewer was put into operation. Also a mud cat (a device for de-sludging of the ground) and a Schilfmähmaschine were purchased to maintain the lake.

There is geological evidence that a long time ago on the southern Mitterberg existed a lake whose level was higher than the few dozen meters of the lake today.

Myths and legends

Where there is now Kaltern, once stood a city whose inhabitants were wicked and ruthless. Only one house was inhabited by a good-natured family. Exactly Christ made halt when he was with his disciples on the road to ask for water and bread. But because of his poverty, the old man could only offer him water. So Peter went into the city to ask for food, but he returned empty-handed, since none of the townspeople was willing to share the bread with him. In Christ angrily spilled the water, which turned into a raging torrent, flooded the city and let the today's lake will be developed, could in which the kind-hearted man fishing from now on and became rich.
