Kamyana Mohyla

Kamjana Mohyla ( also Russian Kamen Well Mogila - Ukrainian Кам'яна Могила; Russian Каменная могила - ' stone grave " ) is a group of up to 12 m high isolated lying sandstone blocks in southern Ukraine on an area of about 3000 square meters scattered 13 km northeast of Melitopol. Originally it is a sandbar of the Tethys Ocean, which lies in the valley of the river Molotschna today.

The hill is crossed in his hillside caves and rock shelters of, in or under which numerous rock carvings were found. Most petroglyphs are due to the weathering difficult to see or be perceived as straight and curved lines. Sometimes pictures of bulls and goats can be detected. Some researchers also want to see mammoths and rhinoceroses. But in contrast to the French caves or cave of Kapova it is difficult to see the pictures of Kamjana Mohyla. A multi-phase settlement at the foot of the hill to the Mesolithic dates back. There are indirect evidence exists that the bulls are to be dated to the Mesolithic paintings. The rock carvings of oxen and a plow in front of a rod loop are neolithic nature.
