Melitopol

Melitopol (Ukrainian Мелітополь; Russian Мелитополь ) is the center of Rajons same name in the Zaporizhia Oblast in Ukraine with 157,000 inhabitants ( 2012). The city is an important industrial center in the south of the oblast, and is located about 60 km north of the Azov Sea, 110 km south of Zaporizhia and 120 km west of Berdyansk.

History

1816 a settlement called Nowoalexandrowka was established at this location. 1842 and received its charter and was renamed in Melitopol.

In Melitopol the POW camp consisted of 424 German prisoners of war of World War II. It was moved here from Nalchik.
