Vilniansk

Wilnjansk (Ukrainian Вільнянськ; Russian Вольнянск / Wolnjansk ) is a Ukrainian city in the north of the Zaporizhia Oblast with 15,916 inhabitants ( 2013), about 22 km northeast of the Oblasthauptstadt Zaporizhia.

Wilnjansk is the administrative center of the raion Wilnjansk, still belongs to the municipality of the village Smorodyne (Ukrainian Смородине ) with 40 inhabitants.

History

Wilnjansk was founded in 1840 under the name Sofiyivka. The first renaming in 1935. The village got the name Krasnoarmeiskoje. In 1939 it was renamed in Tscherwonoarmeisk. 1966 finally the village was raised to the status of a city and acquired its current name Wilnjansk.

The place was occupied on 6 October 1941 to 21 September 1943 by troops of the German Wehrmacht.
