Orikhiv

Orichiw (Ukrainian Оріхів; Russian Орехов / Orekhov ) is a city in the Zaporizhia Oblast in southern Ukraine and the administrative center of the homonymous Rajons. It has about 15,500 inhabitants ( 2013).

Location

The city is situated on the left bank of the river Kinská, about 57 kilometers southeast of Zaporizhia. The Sea of ​​Azov in Berdyansk in the southeast there are about 100 km, to Melitopol in the south about 70 km.

History

The town was founded in 1783 as a Sloboda ( " Free City " ) for military personnel and builder of the fortress Dneprower line. As early as 1801 it became a town, this status was renewed in 1938. The city was a center of Mennonites in the Russian Empire.
