Kandıra

Kandıra is a district in the Turkish province of Kocaeli. It is located north of Izmit Bay and is bordered to the north by the Black Sea. Some villages on the beach among local tourists by their proximity to the cities of Istanbul, Izmit and Bursa popular holiday areas. Some of the most popular holiday villages are Bağirganlı, Kefken, Kerpe, Kumcağız, Sarisu and Seyrek.

Population

14,492 Of the total of 47,041 inhabitants ( census 2008) live in the center. The population density is 51 inhabitants with / km ², the lowest in the province.

Geography

The highest point is 400 meters, the Babadağı (mountain of the Fathers). The main rivers are the streams Sarisu, Seyrek and Kumcağız. The annual sum of precipitation is 900-1000 mm. The region is densely forested. The area is 933.0 km ².

History

The Byzantines gave the city the name Kentri, which has approximately the importance of the center. Kandira was conquered during the Ottoman government to Sultan Orhan I between 1308-1317 Akçakoca Bey and incorporated into the Ottoman Empire.

Until 1868 Kandıra was a municipality of the district of Üsküdar, which is a district of Istanbul today. After Kandıra had received 1868 county rights, it was incorporated into the province of Kocaeli. During the Turkish Independence War, it was occupied in 1918 by British and 1920 by Greek troops. Kandira suffered throughout its history attacks by Greeks, Circassians and Abbazaren.
