Kangaamiut

Kangaamiut is a settlement in western Greenland. It is located 63 km from Maniitsoq away on an island. In the village of 351 inhabitants ( 2012).

1755 Kangaamiut was founded by the Danish merchant Anders Olsen. At that time it was called the " Sukkertoppen " ( German Sugar Loaf ), which is derived by a correspondingly shaped mountain near the village. As the port of Kangaamiut is very unprotected, it was decided to relocate the settlement at a better location. So Maniitsoq was founded in 1781, most residents relocated there and also the name Sukkertoppen was acquired by Maniitsoq.

Today fishing is the largest source of income of the village. There is also a fish processing plant here. Kangaamiut also has its own sports center and place of publication of the newspaper " Kangamiormio Kangaamiormiut Aviisiat ".

Since 2009, the settlement belongs to the commune Qeqqata (previously the municipality Maniitsoq ).
