Kangiqsualujjuaq, Quebec

Kangiqsualujjuaq ( former names: Fort Severight, Fort George River and Port du Nouveau -Québec ) is the north-eastern Inuit settlement in the region Inuvik, Northern Quebec and has about 648 inhabitants. The village name means "very large bay ". The village is located about 160 kilometers northeast of Kuujjuaq in a Akilasakalluq called Bay of Rivière George, about 25 kilometers above its confluence with the Ungava Bay. The ruling in the Ungava Bay tides affect far and lasting impact on the lives of residents in the settlement of people.

History

In the years 1838-1842, 1876-1915, and a third time from 1923 to 1932, the Hudson's Bay Company operating south of the present settlement a trading post, but this is not caused her Inuit to settle here. They preferred to spend the summer in a proven way to the coast and the winter in the interior. This only began to change in the late 1950s. A tragic event made Kangiqsualujjuaq well known: While the settlement residents celebrated on the night of January 1, 1999 in Satuumavik School New Year, rushed an avalanche on the building, destroyed the gym and filled the classrooms full of snow. Nine people were killed, many were injured. As a result, a safe distance from the nearby mountain were defined and added to all avalanche-prone houses; the new school was opened in 2001.

Environment

About 100 kilometers east of Kangiqsualujjuaq the chain of the Torngat Mountains, which at about 300 kilometers, the running from south to north border between North Quebec and Labrador ( Newfoundland and Labrador ) charges tagged.
