Karatau, Kazakhstan

Qaratau ( Kazakh Қаратау - Black Mountain; Russian Каратау / Karatau ) is a small city in Kazakhstan, and the administrative headquarters of the district of Talas in Zhambyl area with about 28,000 residents.

Qaratau is a green oasis on the edge of the steppe and at the foot of Qaratau Schotasy. The proportion of the Kurdish inhabitants of the mountains Qarataus is about one third of the population.

The village has a lyceum. About 10 km from Qaratau located since December 2001 a seismological observatory of the Geophysical Institute in Almaty, the recording data for the organization of the Comprehensive Nuclear Test-Ban as part of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapon Tests for Kazakhstan.

Traffic

The city is located at the junction of Route Turksib of Taras after Schanatas.
