Karel Werner

Karel Werner ( born January 12, 1925 in Jehnice ) is a Czech Indologist, orientalist and scholar of religion.

Life

Werner attended high schools in Brno and Znojmo. After his graduation in 1945, he studied Sanskrit, Philosophy, History and Chinese Studies at Masaryk University in Brno and Palacky University in Olomouc, was where in 1949 his doctorate with a linguistic work of Doctor of Philosophy.

He then taught four years at the Palacký University Sanskrit and Indian history until he was dismissed because of his critical attitude towards the communist government. He was then forced to fifteen years as a miner, workers to work in a gas factory and other industrial plants. Once the expectations have been disappointed at the Prague Spring by the occupation of Czechoslovakia by the Warsaw Pact troops, Karel Werner succeeded in 1968 to escape to England. He was taken by Lama Anagarika Govinda with the initiation Vajrbuddhi name in the Order Arya Maitreya Mandala. In England he worked as a tutor at Churchill College, University of Cambridge.

From 1969 to 1990 he was then a lecturer in Indian philosophy at the University of Durham. This was interrupted by a visiting professor in 1975 and 1976 in India, where he taught at the Banaras Hindu University in Varanasi and the Karnatak University in Dharwad.

After that, Karl Werner worked as a professor at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. Even after his retirement, he lives in London.

Work

In addition to his academic teaching Karel Werner has published numerous own works and translations that are dedicated to particular Hinduism, Buddhism and Yoga. He writes in English and Czech as well as in German. On the occasion of Karl Werner's 60th birthday Peter Connolly was 1986, a Festschrift out, which appeared in India.
