Karl Anton Rickenbacher

Karl Anton Rickenbacher ( born May 20, 1940 in Basel, † February 28, 2014 in Montreux ) was a Swiss conductor.

Life

Karl Anton Rickenbacher studied at the Municipal Conservatory in Berlin, attended conducting courses with Herbert von Karajan and Pierre Boulez, and was an assistant of Otto Klemperer. In 1966, he began his career as an accompanist at the Opera House Zurich, 1969, he joined his first permanent position: the first conductor and assistant music director at the Municipal Theater in Freiburg im Breisgau. From 1975 to 1985 Rickenbacher chief of the Westphalian Symphony Orchestra Recklinghausen. From 1978 to 1980 he was chief conductor of the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra in Glasgow, which he saved from budget cuts and the threat of dissolution. Since 1987, he headed the Brussels Philharmonic also (BRT Philharmonic Orchestra ). From 1990 Rickenbacher worked as a freelance guest conductor with major orchestras and festivals.

Rickenbacher conducted the major works of classical music, literature, devoted to the discovery and dissemination of forgotten works, and sat down for a contemporary work. With Olivier Messiaen, he was a friend. Werner Egk and Jean Françaix he commissioned with compositions for the Westphalian Symphony Orchestra Recklinghausen. Ricke Bachers discography includes works by Beethoven, Wagner, Liszt, Bruckner, Mahler and Messiaen, among others, the London Philharmonic Orchestra. Between 1997 and 2000 he played in Berlin, Bamberg and Munich, the 14 CDs comprehensive series " The Unknown Richard Strauss ' one.

He was awarded the Grand Prix du Disque from for his recording of Darius Milhaud's " Petites Symphonies", the Cannes Classical Award with Karl Amadeus Hartmann's " Sinfonia tragica " and the ECHO Klassik Prize of the Deutsche Phono-Akademie in 1999, 2000 and 2001 for works Richard- Strauss- series and Olivier Messiaen's " La Transfiguration ".

On February 28, 2014, Karl Anton Rickenbacher, died at his home in Montreux because of heart failure, sitting on the wing, before the score of the 1st movement of the Symphony No. 2 by Gustav Mahler, whom he had in Geneva on March 16, 2014 to conduct.
