Karl Budde

Karl Ferdinand Reinhard Budde ( born April 13, 1850 in Bensberg, † January 29, 1935 in Marburg ) was a German Protestant theologian and Old Testament scholar.

Life

Budde was the son of a senior teacher at the military academy in Bensberg. The Krupp director Otto Budde and the later Prussian minister Hermann von Budde were his brothers. He received a classical humanistic education at the Royal Grammar School at Castle Square to eat. From 1867 to 1873 he studied Protestant theology in Bonn, Berlin and Utrecht. Even with 23 years Budde in 1873 Privatdozent and in 1879 associate professor at the University of Bonn. From 1878 to 1885 he was also inspector of the Theological Stift and taught German, history and religion at a Higher Girls' School. In 1889 he was appointed professor of Old Testament at the University of Strasbourg. From 1900 until his retirement in 1921 he taught at the University of Marburg and in 1910 was its rector.

In 1883 he received an Honorary Doctorate of Theology of the University of Giessen; 1911 by the Scottish University of St Andrews.

He was at the time as a major representative of the old well house 's school. In addition to his work on the Old Testament, he campaigned for the purposes of cultural Protestantism for the religious art of Ludwig Richter. His great judge Collection 1907 he donated to the Museum Folkwang. Since the acquaintance with Friedrich Spitta and Julius Smend in Strasbourg, Budde interested in particular to the hymnology and engaged for the Elderly liturgical movement. He belonged to the Commission for the Strasbourg Hymns, created new translations of the Old Dutch Songs of Adrianus Valerius, and encouraged the rediscovery of old Christmas carols on.

Of his numerous hymn arrangements and translations is God's creatures abound comes, been included transfer of the Canticle of St. Francis of Assisi for an English presentation of William Henry Draper into the Protestant hymnal (EC 514).
