Karl Fischer (chemist)

Charles Albert Otto Franz Fischer ( born March 24, 1901 in Pasing / Munich, † April 16, 1958 ) was a German chemist.

Life and work

Fischer studied from 1918 to 1924 at the University of Leipzig chemistry. It was founded in 1925 with the work of studies on the influence of various Magnesiumoxydpräparate for their effect on vulcanization and properties of the rubber to the Dr. phil. doctorate. Then he remained until 1927 as a university assistant in Leipzig. He then worked in industrial petrochemicals.

He became known primarily through the 1935 he developed titrimetric method for the determination of water content in liquids and solids ( Karl Fischer method ), which is still used today in analytical laboratories and is the legal standard method in almost every pharmacopoeia world.

His estate is currently being processed scientifically at the Institute for the History of Pharmacy at the University of Marburg.
