Karl Friedrich Wilhelm Jessen

Carl ( Frederick William ) Jessen ( born September 15, 1821 in Schleswig, † May 27, 1889 in Berlin) was a German botanist and university professor in Greifswald. His botanical author abbreviation is " Jess. ".

Life

Jessen studied at the Christian -Albrechts- University and was a member of the Corps Saxonia Kiel since 1843. In Kiel he received his doctorate in 1848, Dr. phil ..

A short time later he was hired as a lecturer of botany at the Academy, founded in 1835 in agricultural Eldena. At the same time he habilitated at the Ernst- Moritz- Arndt- University Greifswald and was Professor of Botany. In 1871 he took part in a by the Prussian Ministry of Agriculture equipped Baltic Sea Expedition.

In 1854, he was inducted into the Imperial Leopoldinisch - Carolinian Academy. When the Academy was abolished in Eldena 1877, Jessen moved to Berlin. There he worked as a writer and has lectured at the Friedrich- Wilhelms-Universität. After a short illness, he died at 68 years.

In lectures, he spoke about Natural basic laws of the visual arts, aesthetics, science and physiology of the soul. As in his book of 1855 he turned in his lecture on the origin and continuance of living beings against Darwin's theory.
