Karl Gottlieb Bretschneider

Karl Gottlieb Bretschneider ( born February 11, 1776 in Gersdorf; † January 22, 1848 in Gotha ) was a German Protestant theologian and an important representative of the Theological rationalism.

Life

Born the son of the pastor in Lichtenberg, Johann Gottlieb Bretschneider and his wife Johanna Christina (born Kuttner ), he lost his parents in the 13th year of life. He was then brought up by his uncle. In 1794 he enrolled at the University of Leipzig. Following his studies he took in 1797 to a private tutor in Oberwiera plate and returned in 1802 in the same capacity in 1802 back to Leipzig. 1804 he received his doctorate and habilitation at the University of Wittenberg, after which he held as a private lectures on philosophy and theology. He decided because of the troubled times of war, pursue an ecclesiastical career, and consequently declined in 1809 appointed professor at the University of Königsberg from. Instead, he went as pastor to Schneeberg and Annaberg. In 1816, he came as a General Superintendent to Gotha, where he was much literary activities until his death.

His son was the lawyer and mathematician Carl Anton Bretschneider.
