Karl Mayreder

Karl Mayr Eder ( born June 13, 1856 in Wall (now Vienna); † September 9, 1935 in Vienna) was an Austrian architect.

Life and work

Karl Mayr Eder was born as the son of hoteliers Leopold Mayr Eder, who successfully led the business acquired by his father famous hotel " Matschakerhof " in Vienna I, spiegelgasse 5 / Seiler Gasse 7, and Henriette Mayr Eder. He studied from 1872 to 1877 at the Technical University of Vienna, where he was a pupil of Heinrich von Ferstel and later assistant to Karl King. During his studies he learned the know scientifically and to an improvement in the status of women interested Rosa Obermayer at a regular Stammtisch, who was the only way for them to develop their personality according to their ideals. In 1881 they married. From 1880 to 1884 he worked in the studio of Ferstel.

As of January 24, 1885 he was a member of the Vienna Künstlerhaus, from 1888 the Austrian Engineers and Architects Association. In 1893 he won with his brothers Julius and Rudolf Mayr Eder (the latter founded the construction company Mayreder Kraus ) competition to regulate the exchange district in Vienna and received, also with his brothers, a 2nd prize for a project to city regulation plan of Vienna. From 1894 to 1902 he was head of the town regulatory agencies of the Vienna city engineer, with several former projects of urban planning, in particular road breakthroughs, go back to him. This feature also means that he was appointed a judge for competitions on sightseeing regulatory projects in several European cities led.

From 1898 he was an associate professor of the propaedeutic of architecture, 1900, he was appointed full professor of the architecture of antiquity. He was also the driving force behind the introduction of a Chair in Urban Design at the Technical University. From 1923 on he held at the University 's rector, but had to go due to illness in 1925 to retire. In 1929 he was appointed honorary doctorate from the Technical University of Graz.

In addition Mayreder also worked as a private architect and built several palaces and other buildings, although with more of them its authorship is uncertain.

Karl Mayr Eder is buried in the Viennese central cemetery in the family grave " Mayreder " on the side of his spouse Mayreder, his parents, Leopold and Henriette Mayr Eder, his brother Julius Mayr Eder and his sisters.
