Karl Münchinger

Karl Münchinger (* May 29, 1915 in Stuttgart, † March 13, 1990 ) was a German conductor.

Karl Münchinger studied by youthful violin orchestra conducting with Carl Leonhardt at the Musikhochschule Stuttgart and worked at the Stuttgart Marie Church as choir director and organist. After subsequent studies in conducting with Hermann Abendroth at the Leipzig Conservatory and summer courses at Clemens Krauss helped him support Wilhelm Furtwängler for the management of the Lower Saxony Hanover Symphony Orchestra ( 1941-1943 ). After the return from captivity, he founded their own initiative in 1945, the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra, which he quickly brought to international fame and led until 1987. 1953 Karl Münchinger received the title of professor of the State of Baden- Württemberg and the Grand Cross of the Federal Republic of Germany, " in recognition of his artistic merits ."

Even if Münchinger not one of the advocates of historical performance practice, he represented from the outset, a liberated and entschlacktes of romantic notions sound. Low -voice ensembles, rigorous compliance requirements as well as stylistic and interpretive pace provisos of the composers were to him as guides his interpretations were consistently characterized by a transparent and homogeneous lean sound.

The name Münchinger quickly became synonymous with exemplary (ie, anti- romantic ) interpretations of orchestral works by Johann Sebastian Bach. The cornerstone of the work with the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra formed a wide -ranging repertoire of early baroque and baroque compositions, many of which recordings have been awarded national and international prizes. In the immediate post-war period also were reinforced compositions by contemporary composers on the concert programs. Only in the early 1960s, the Baroque repertoire has been extended to compositions of Viennese classicism; to Münchinger 1966 founded the Classical Philharmonic Stuttgart. Since then, he has also been reinforced committed as a conductor to other European countries and in the United States.
