Karl Sudhoff

Karl Sudhoff (* November 26, 1853 in Frankfurt am Main, † October 8, 1938 in Salzwedel ) was the most important medical historian of his time. His institute in Leipzig was the first institute of discipline.

Life

Karl Sudhoff, son of theologian Karl Jacob Sudhoff (1820-1865), the Royal Prussian attended high school in Bad Kreuznach, (now the school to the city walls ) whose boarding time many children of Protestant citizens from a wide area visited. There he made in 1871 High School and then studied until 1876 in Tübingen, Erlangen and Berlin in medicine, with a PhD in 1875 in Erlangen. In Erlangen, he joined in the winter semester 1871/72 the Christian fraternity Uttenruthia at the Black Castle covenant. After years assistant in Augsburg and Vienna in 1878 he took his work as a general practitioner first in mountains near Frankfurt, then from 1885 as a doctor of the poor of the Lower Berg municipality Millrath ( today Erkrath ) and lodge the doctor Hochdahler ironworks. He got there the Prussian title Sanitätsrat awarded. From 1894 he was also active in the local council.

Since the founding of the German Society for the History of Medicine and Sciences in 1901, he was its chairman.

In 1904 he was appointed associate professor of unplanned history of medicine at the Medical Academy of Dusseldorf. Sudhoff was in 1905 appointed Professor of the History of Medicine at the University of Leipzig ( since 1913 honorary professor ). On 1 April 1906, the Institute was opened in the history of medicine and the natural sciences, that bears his name since 1938, as the first historical medical institute in the world. Since 1919 ( until his retirement in 1925 ), he was a full professor. For 1922/23, its faculty elected him dean.

Politically, he used a German national attitude that 80 -year-old in 1933 led him to join the Nazi party. He died shortly before completion of the 85th year of life during a visit to his son, Dr. Walther Sudhoff, who was from 1924 to 1946 chief physician of the district hospital Salzwedel.

1925 founded the German Society for the History of Medicine and the natural sciences, the Karl Sudhoff Medal for outstanding scientific achievements in the field of history of medicine, the natural sciences or engineering. Is still called, founded by Sudhoff history of science journal Sudhoffs archive. On Karl Sudhoff Institute for the History of Medicine and Natural Sciences of the University of Leipzig is an extensive collection Sudhoff, but this is only very limited access.

Research priorities

Sudhoff is primarily known for his study of medieval medical manuscripts. He was the editor of today Paracelsus relevant output. Sudhoff put to extensive medical history collections and had a very large private library.
