Karl Wilhelm Osterwald

Karl Wilhelm Osterwald ( born February 23, 1820 Bretsch, † March 25, 1887 in Mulhouse ) was an educator, writer, evangelical hymn writer and nature lover.

Life

Osterwald received his education at the grammar school in Salzwedel and at the Francke Foundations in Halle an der Saale. He studied philology at the University of Halle, and was then a teacher at the Royal Pädagogium in Halle and the Domgymnasium in Merseburg active. From 1865 he was a director at the high school in Mulhouse.

During his Muehlhaeuser time he published several educational journals and seals. About 70 of his nature, hiking and love poems were set to music by Robert Franz. His former pupil, the biologist Richard von Hertwig, 1889 sat in his honor a monument in the city of Mühlhausen forest.

Together with the cathedral organist angel in Merseburg he published the Sacred Songs of Johann Franck, whom he had provided with new lyrics. In addition, he also wrote his own hymns. In the Protestant church hymnals of the early 20th century hymns find from Osterwald, including the Advent hymn O Thou my consolation and sweet hope and the carol Heilge night, I greet you.

Osterwald the eagle was awarded the Royal House Order of Hohenzollern. He belonged to the Federation of Masons.
