Karol Irzykowski

Karol Irzykowski ( born January 23, 1873 in Błaszkowa at Jasło, † November 2, 1944 in Żyrardów ) was a Polish writer, literary critic and film theorist.

Life

Irzykowski came from an impoverished gentry family. In the years 1889-1893 he studied German in Lviv. In the years 1894-1895 he worked temporarily as a teacher, but prevented him from pronunciation errors at other didactic work. Since 1895 he lived in Lvov and worked as parliamentary and court stenographer. In 1908 he moved to Krakow, where he worked as a stenographer and a correspondent in the official correspondence office. After the first world war he moved to Warsaw, where he headed the stenographic office of the Sejm.

Irzykowski was a member of the Scamander, the WiadomoĹ Literackie and in the years 1921-1933 of Robotnik, the organ of the Polish Socialist Party. He raised his voice in many discussions about the literature. He led a theater column in the Polish Radio and in Rocznik Literacki, next was a member of the Polish Academy of Literature. In the time of the German occupation he gave to the livelihood Stenographieunterricht and participated in the cultural life in the underground. He died after the liberation in Żyrardów.
