Károly Kisfaludy

Károly Kisfaludy ( born February 5, 1788 in Tét, † November 21, 1830 in Pest ) was a Hungarian playwright, painter and the brother of Sándor Kisfaludy. He is considered the founder of the Hungarian national drama.

He grew up without a mother, who died at his birth, with his seven brothers and sisters at his father, to which he had no good relationship. Kisfaludy began writing poems and songs in his army service during the Napoleonic Wars. After his retirement in 1810, he studied art and traveled to Vienna in 1812 and 1815 to Italy. His breakthrough as a playwright, he celebrated in 1819, when his tragedies A tatárok Magyarországon ( " The Tartars in Hungary " ) and Ilka, vagy Nándorfehérvár bevétele ( " Ilka or the conquest of Belgrade" ) were a great success. His works were translated into German and performed in Vienna. Károly Kisfaludy died in 1830 of tuberculosis.
