The Kraški ovčar [ kra ː ʃki owtʃa ː r] ( German for something like this: " Karst Shepherd Dog" ) is recognized by the FCI breed from Slovenia (FCI Group 2, Section 2.2, Standard No. 278).

Origin and History

The Kraški ovčar belongs to the shepherd dogs. As early as 1689 he was mentioned by Baron Janez Vajkard Valvasor in a book. In the literature, mid-20th century the German Shepherd from the karst mountains together with the shepherd of Sarplaninagebirge, today sarplaninac, under the name Illyrian Sheepdog ( Ilirski ovčar ) is performed. In 1968 the final separation of the two races by the Yugoslav Stud. The differences between the races are minimal even today.

Description

The Kraški ovčar is up to 63 cm high and 42 kg heavier, more robust dog of compact structure. Tail and ears fall down. The long, abundant and absolutely weatherproof hair is iron-gray color, with a lot of dense undercoat. A dark mask completes the look.

Use

The Kraški ovčar is the typical shepherd dog ( guard dog ) of this area. He operates largely independently, what is absolutely important also to protect the herd. Its universality is reflected in the fact that it can also be used as a watch and guard dog and is often kept as a pet.

Nature

The breed standard describes the Kraški ovčar as good-natured, courageous and vigilant without being snappy. He should show result of his caregiver, but be wary of strangers. Therefore, he is a good guard dog. He is said to have a moderately lively temperament and act very independently. The standard also describes him as pleasant and obedient companion dog.
